Who am I?
I am Nicholas Loncar, a Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney.

Who Do I Defend?
Everyone.  We all have rights, but sadly, they are eroding.  Citizens are not as free from unreasonable government intrusion as we should be.  The outcome of a criminal case is not only important to the defendant, but often affects our important rights to privacy and liberty.  When LAPD officers conduct an illegal search (one unsupported by probable cause), a Los Angeles Criminal Defense Attorney will be responsible for getting any resulting evidence thrown out.  It is in this way that criminal defense attorneys deter government impingement of our rights.  The reason you're not patted down and strip searched once a week is that defense attorneys fight over your rights in court everyday. 

Everyone is entitled to committed representation, especially when facing criminal charges.  An estimated 10,000 people per year are wrongly convicted by our overzealous law enforcement machine.  This in the largest imprisoned population in the word, in human history.  We are often proud to say we live in a "free country" and the freedoms at stake in criminal cases are the most important freedoms we enjoy.  As a condition of signing the United States Constitution, the signers demanded a Bill of Rights, an entrenchment of inalienable rights that the government must not deny us.  Of the ten amendments comprising the Bill of Rights, eight have significant application in criminal law.

So when I say I DEFEND LOS ANGELES, I don't only defend those accused of crimes.  Asserting our important rights in an age where the "Patriot Act" ignored the Fourth Amendment, our government is listening in on our telephone conversations, and the courts continue to carve out exceptions to our rights, I am proud to fight for the ideals upon which our nation was founded.

Why Did I Want to Be a Criminal Defense Attorney?
I recognized injustice at an early age, but also do not like accusations.  The phrase "may he without sin cast the first stone" nicely summarizes my beliefs.  Surely we need laws and to enforce them, but the system has to respect its citizens.  Police, lawmakers and prosecutors have gone way too far.  Government intimidation and laws that permit one mistake to ruin someone's life make me want to passionately fight the erosion of our civil liberties.

Additionally, I started honing the skills of a defense attorney at a very young age.  In a mock trial in third grade, I impressed my teacher with my analytic skills and vocabulary.  Eventually I would go on to become a collegiate debater.  I extremely fortunate to be both highly passionate about what I do and very good at it. 

Why Los Angeles?
Los Angeles is a world class city with a distinguished legal community.  Many of the nation's best judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys handle the criminal matters in a city unlike any other on the planet.  As a party city with poor public transportation, DUI and drug crimes are common.  LA is also notorious for a significant gang presence. 

I am originally from Philadelphia, and did a Summer internship in San Diego during law school.  The palm trees and perfect weather made it difficult to go back to Philadelphia, so I decided to start my legal career in Los Angeles.  Once you get used to 75 degree, sunny days everyday, it's hard to give up.  LA is my home now.

What Other Practice Areas?
My practice is predominantly criminal defense, but also involves another area of government intrusion known as asset forfeiture.  When citizens are arrested, my office helps them fight for their liberty and to keep their record clean; when the government takes property (including cash, vehicles, real estate, computers and more), I fight to get it returned to its rightful owner.
